Typical Problems Encountered With Cable Glands & Cable Terminations

Throughout any inspection campaign non-compliant issues are going to be found. Here are some common issues we have found with cable glands and terminations whilst conducting inspections.

Cable Glands

  • Loose back nuts
  • Gland not tight in enclosure
  • Over-tightening of the back nut compressing IP seal
  • Armour clamping ring not correctly installed and exposed at the back of the gland
  • Armour braiding cut back too far
  • Over or undersized cable glands
  • Missing or incorrectly located IP washers
  • Incorrect installation of barrier glands
  • Inserting glands and adaptors into threaded entries of a different size
  • Certificate of Conformity not read
  • Uncertified glands or adaptors or certified under a non IECEx or ANZEx scheme, but no Conformity Assessment Document
  • Incorrect IP rating for glands or adaptors

Cable Terminations

  • Incorrect type and size of cable lugs or for voltage used (special lugs for high voltage required)
  • Incorrect lug type for protection technique (Ex e lugs and fasteners are special types)
  • Lug incorrectly crimped
  • Wrong crimping tool used Insulation
  • Stripped back too for or not enough
  • Insufficient length of conductor inside the lug
  • Incorrect cable type or diameter for the equipment
  • Terminals being over-tightened
  • Terminals being under-tightened
  • Spare conductors not terminated
  • Screens not terminated
  • Unused terminals not being securely tightened down
