“LIKE FOR LIKE” – Type B Gas Appliance
The process for a Type B gas appliance to be certified is that the Designer designs the system for the Gas Appliance and ensures that it meets the requirements of the gas codes.
This being said the design will specify within the fuel train the specific equipment needed for the gas appliance to operate. When the technical submission is finalised and sent to an Approval Authority it is their role to verify that the design complies with the legislation and standards and they will have the experience to ensure that the gas device once installed and commission is safe when in use.
The Approval Authority will issue a Gas Device (Type B) Approval Certificate (733) which accompanies the Technical Submission as an complete package for the design.
The gas appliance once installed and commissioned should reflect what the Designer has designed and reflect exactly whats in the Technical submission.
If the gas appliance then requires work to be done and there is a requirement to change out components and these are not the same as whats in the Technical Submission, then this is not going to reflect the Technical submission and is not Like for Like.
What would be considered as Like for Like
- Equipment make the same
- Equipment model the same
- Electrical characteristics are the same i.e. voltage, frequency, current
- Gas characteristics the same
- Pressures not changed
The Equipment is not the only thing that is considered here, if any of the following are altered to that of the Technical Submission, then it would not be Like for Like and the Technical Submission would have to be reviewed again.
- PES altered or changed
- Ventilation altered or changed
- Purge times altered
- Exhaust flue changed or altered
If you are working on a Type B gas appliance and find yourself in a situation where something does not reflect the Technical Submission, its better to stop and ask why, then carry on with the job and leave it thinking its compliant when it’s probably not.
