HAZ have been using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for Clients to paint the picture of the effects of leaks on equipment.
This particular Client wanted to understand the effects of a leak on a LPG bottle and what they would look like.
The image below shows a 2mm leak from the bottle and the effects it has on the wall behind.
The hole size was the most significant factor to be estimated as this determines the release rate of the flammable substance and thus the type of zone and the extent. Release rate is proportional to the square of the hole radius.
A underestimation of the hole size will lead to a gross underestimation of the calculated value for release rate, which should be avoided.
A overestimation of the hole size will lead to a conservative calculation which is acceptable for safety reasons, however, the degree of conservatism should also be limited because it eventually results with overlarge zone extents
With guidance from IEC 60079.10.1 Ed 2 2015 Table B.1 difference hole sizes were discussed and run to understand the effects this would have on the equipment.
Additionally, the flammable range of LPG and the Upper and Lower limits can be shown and compared to with the Path lines created from the CFD.
