Conformity Assessment – ATEX Documentation

The requirements for Conformity Assessment are listed in AS/NZS 60079.14:2017 Appendix ZD. The requirements for an ATEX certification are listed in Clause ZD6 North American Documentation. The following documents or items are critical to the successful compilation of a conformity assessment for CSA/UL/FM Certified Equipment. Assessment to these requirements can be time consuming and does not always have the same degree of traceability that ATEX certifications do. A worked example of a CAD for a UL certified motor is used to demonstrate the process, but the requirements are similar for CSA or FM.

Sample of the Equipment or High Resolution Photographs

High resolution photographs of all certification details are required, including:

  • Note that this motor carries both UL and CSA markings. It is therefore Dual Certified.
  • Complete Model Number: CEM7054T-I; Frame Size 254TC
  • Certification marking: Class I, Division 1, Groups C & D; Group IIB & IIA; T3C; IP55
  • Certificate Class: ELECTRIC MOTOR FOR HAZARDOUS AREAS
  • Maximum Continuous Ambient Temperature: 40°C

Note that, in this case, a Certificate Number has not been marked. This is not unusual and requires some detective work to determine, with any certainty, what it is. Always contact the original manufacturer to obtain the correct certificate.

For the purposes of this exercise, the certificate number for this motor was eventually confirmed to be:

UL 201141214-E6951 (or simply, E6951 when referred to in the manufacturer’s literature)

ZD6.1 UL DOCUMENTATION

UL Documentation

Quoting from AS/NZS 60079.14:2017 Clause ZD6.1:

“The UL Listing/certification program (see ‘UL Product iQ’) involves all the items for a Certification Scheme type 5 including type test and quality requirements through the compulsory factory surveillance program. This means that the evidence of a listing ( or occasionally a certificate) will enable the Standards used to be determined, allowing a Conformity Assessment Document to be prepared. In all cases the testing will be conducted by UL. As there is no relaxation of the factory surveillance permitted, it is accepted that this is integral and current, for the Listing to remain valid. It is important that variations in installation, inspection, maintenance and repair are identified and highlighted in the Conformity Assessment Document.”

Motor Model and Frame Size – Traceability to Certification

Using the UL Prospector link to the UL Certificate Database, search by:

  • KEYWORD using “Motors for Use in Hazardous Areas”, and
  • COMPANY NAME, initially using “Baldor” and then selecting “Baldor Electric Co”.

The following records become available:

The other entries have catalogue numbers that do not align with the marking label, so choose PTDR.E6951.

From the above, the hazardous areas are the same as those on the marking label. The resulting UL Certificate Number is E6951.

The Certificate of Compliance is the document that was required to start the assessment:

The mechanics of comparing UL674, to which the motor was certified by UL, to AS/NZS 60070.0 &.1 are not part of this instruction regarding the required documents for a UL to AS/NZS CAD, just the required reference documents that shown traceability.

A further importing item of information was gleaned from the Baldor Catalogue, which is provides the CSA certificate number. See the justification from the example CAD on the following page. There are times when information on datasheets can tie two certifications together. Note that the above UL certificate has no temperature classification allocated, but the parallel CSA certificate (next page) does.


Other Documents Required for a UL CAD

  • The manufacturer’s ISO 9001 accreditation certificate, which must include the product being assessed in the general description of what the company does on the certificate
  • Any written advice that the original manufacturer has be taken over by another company (in this case, Baldor is now owned by ABB, which explains why the ISO 9001 certificate is in ABBs name).
  • Relevant Datasheets, Manuals and Drawings.
  • Any on-site maintenance manual if appropriate
  • The assessors competency certification.

ZD6.2 FM documentation

Quoting from AS/NZS 60079.14:2017 Clause ZD6.2:

“The FM Certification program involves all the items for a Certification Scheme type 5 including type test and quality requirements through the compulsory factory surveillance program. This means that the evidence of a Certificate of Approval or Certificate of Compliance will identify the Standards and allow a Conformity Assessment Document to be prepared. In all cases the testing will have been conducted by FM. As there is no relaxation of the factory surveillance permitted, it is accepted that this is integral and current, for the Certificate to remain valid. It is important that variations in installation, inspection, maintenance and repair are identified and highlighted in the Conformity Assessment Document.”

CSA have a certification database, which allows the end user a CSA Certified items, to check its credentials on line, and to confirm in detail whether the item is or is not CSA certified:

ZD6.3 CSA documentation

Quoting from AS/NZS 60079.14:2017 Clause ZD6.3:

“The CSA Certification program involves all the items for a Certification Scheme type 5, except it may be necessary to verify if CSA has conducted all the testing or can accept the Test Report used under the terms of their accreditation. The North American compulsory factory surveillance program is also applied in Canada. This means that the evidence of a Certificate of Compliance will identify the Standards used and allow a Conformity Assessment Document to be prepared. As there is no relaxation of the factory surveillance permitted, it is accepted that this is integral and current, for the Certificate to remain valid. It is important that variations in installation, inspection, maintenance and repair are identified and highlighted in the Conformity Assessment Document.”
